Geographical Regions Austria's diversity does not only shine through its landscape but through its
population as well. Due to its central location in the heart of Europe and its
vibrant history, a cross-section of cultures flow together and are combined in
Austria.
Graz As Austria's second largest city it lies in the very heart of Europe, in the
province of Styria. Every year, the European Union confers the title of
Cultural Capital on one or more European cities. In 2003, there is only one
Cultural Capital of Europe - Graz.
Graz possesses cultural character as
part of its tradition. In the best preserved old city centre of central Europe,
traces of every period are apparent and in recognition of this, Graz has become
part of the exclusive group of United Nations Cultural World Heritage.
Climate The four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) each have typical
temperature and climatic characters. Due to the topographical diversity
and the relatively large West-East expanse, there are three differentiating
climatic regions:
East: Pannonian climate with a continental influence –
low precipitation, hot summers but only moderately cold winters.
Alpine
Regions: Alpine climate - high precipitation ( except inner alpine valley
regions such as the upper Inntal), short summers, long winters.
Remainder of the country: transient climate influenced by the Atlantic
(in the West) and a continental influence in the South-east
